This year’s Civil War Navy Conference coincides with the 150th anniversary of the naval Battle of Hampton Roads – March 9-11. The Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, VA, hosts the conference. Other participating organizations include NOAA’s Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, The Museum of the Confederacy, and the Hampton Roads Naval Museum have combined in support of this event. The conference features keynote speakers Harold Holzer and Craig Symonds. In addition the Mariners’ Museum has several events held in conjunction with the anniversary. You can get the full details from the Battle of Hampton Roads website.
I’m rather excited about the list of twenty or so speakers presenting papers over the weekend. There are some interesting topics covering the broad scope of naval warfare, from technical to tactical, with a few “sailor studies” thrown in there too. More than a few familiar names on the list. I’m actually looking forward to some of those sessions more than the featured speakers!
For those considering attendance at the conference, notice there is an increase in the registration fee as we get closer to the date. Best RSVP early!
As mentioned before, I hope to post some dispatches from the event during the weekend. Hope to see many of you there!
