Civil War Thanksgivings

Another Turkey Day is upon us! And none too soon!

We’ve got a turkey thawing and all sorts of great things in the works.  We have kitchen reinforcements arriving to aid in the preparations.  But I WILL NOT allow XBrad to “prepare” the bird (unless he brings over a pecan pie).  My Chief of Staff has promised to have cornbread dressing, “like your mother makes.”  So my anticipation is unbounded.  But enough talk of my holiday workup.

If you are looking for some Civil War era vignettes on Thanksgiving, head over to Civil War Monitor’s Front Line.   Laura has pulled several from the archives:

The Customs of our Puritan Fathers

Thanksgiving Sensations

A Thanksgiving Day Proclamation

“Fleshing Our Teeth in Secesh Gobbler…”

Good reading there.

Happy Thanksgiving to ya’ll.
