Voting for the Sickles Open Now!

Over at Gettysburg Daily, voting on the first annual Sickles Award is open now.  Voting is done by email submission, and ends on June 30.

The “Sickles” is sort of a light-hearted pick on General Dan Sickles, alluding to his ill-advised move forward to the Peach Orchard on July 2, 1862.  The nominees are activities, actions, or just “things” from the town and battlefield of Gettysburg which similarly fit lead one to wonder, “What were they thinking?”

My contribution to the nomination list this year is the 96th Pennsylvania Infantry’s flank marker.   While documenting the monument back last year, I was attempting to align the unit position to my map.  I could not find the flank marker at all to at least orient off.  Well, after kicking some leaves aside where I thought it might be, I found it half buried beside the road.

Gettysburg Daily announces the winners on July 2, the anniversary of the General’s famous blunder.

  1. Glad to see one of my favorite blogs (markers are a small passion of mine out west as well, but they’re of a different sort) supporting what has by far been my favorite website covering Gettysburg that I’ve ever seen. I don’t know how they find the time!
